...and no wisecracks like "By Centaur!" ;D
I just wondered whether everyone here had followed the route that Nathan and I did - i.e. buying BSB to get vintage "Doctor Who" repeats. Chris, I guess, has come through a love of soap opera? (Judging by your website, Chris.)
Is there anyone who has taken a leap of faith and bought the DVDs knowing next to nothing about the series, then has fallen in love with it?

I used to watch S&D when I got home from school and got into it again when Five started repeating it. I don't watch any current soaps! I can't even remember why I got BSB, but it probably WAS for Doctor Who. ;D

I'd heard of it when it first started after reading some magazine articles about the show(Could have been in TV Zone), but never got satellite TV until BSB had merged with SKY and after JM had been shown on the old Sci-FI Channel.
I'd seen volume 1 in Virgin Megastore in Nottingham, but had brought something else instead that day (MacGyver Season 1 to be exact)
I actually found someone selling the first 3 volumes on eBay at the end of July and managed to buy them all for £3 each plus postage.
I brought volumes 4 & 5 from Amazon once the first 3 volumes had arrived and just left them on my shelf with the rest of my DVDs. I got board one day last week and started to Volume 1, which I watched in one sitting! That night I ordered Volumes 6 & 7 from Amazon.
Within 9 days, including gettiing Volume 6 replaced because it was faulty (only one layer of the DVD had been burnt), which Oracle replaced by return of post, I'd watched all the episodes that were available and have preordered Volumes 8 & 9.

There is no denying that Jupiter Moon is highly addictive! But it's distinctly better for you than crack cocaine...
There you go, Nathan, another quote for the next Oracle DVD.
"It's distinctly better for you than crack cocaine..." Alan Hayes, The Mausoleum Club

I get all nostalgic for "The Sullivans" for the same reasons... It used to be on when I came home from school for lunch, and my mother always watched it. You've done a good job on the site. There's a remarkable amount of work that's clearly gone into it.

As for "Sons and Daughters", originally I never watched it to the end because it got, well "crap" basically. But I'm perservering with the reruns on Five - I'm determined to see it until the end. It's like watching a pet die slowly - it's an absolute parody of what it used to be. I'm not surprised they cancelled it - but I'm determined to see it through to the end this time!!

My sister used to like "The Sullivans". The war lasted about ten years in that, didn't it!? I think it was 7 years - 1976-1983 or something like that. (Of course we were behind with transmissions in the UK.) I think "Heartbeat" has now lasted longer than the decade in which it is set - the 1960s... Sounds like "Doctor Who" in the 80s. Painful to watch, but you felt obliged to be loyal...

Oooh! You didn't enjoy ANY Doctor Who in the '80s? A very harsh statement methinks! I actually really enjoyed the Peter Davison era - it's the one I grew up with.

I wasn't that enamoured of the Davison era, and in retrospect there's very little from the 80s that floats my boat. Outside of Androzani, Revelation and a few McCoy's, it's a bit of a waste of talent IMHO: for instance, I really wish Colin Baker was allowed to approach the role how *he* wanted to. Mark Strickson was the best 80s companion and he was completely sidelined after his initial trilogy. I curse the day that JN-T took office... He was completely wrong for it as a drama show - brilliant publicist and ring-leader, but a man better suited to The Generation Game than Doctor Who.

It's quite clear that you basically hate '80s Who.
Don't get me wrong - I love both Pertwee and Baker, but they both had their share of s**t stories.
Name your favourites so I can rip the p**s out of you!

I don't hate 80s Doctor Who, I just find it disappointing. Potentially great Doctors wasted amid a dramaless, suspenseless, style-over-substance mess. There are some stories that on rewatching (Alys and I are currently on a 'Dr. Who from the Start' - like Galaxy never quite managed - and are up to "Arc of Infinity"), I don't think they're as bad as I remember. Even "Time-Flight" is more bearable than I thought. But generally, it really does feel like a tired show going through the motions.
As for my favourite stories, well, let's think, practically the whole first Hartnell series, "The Dalek Invasion of Earth", "Power/Evil of the Daleks", "Tomb of the Cybermen", "The Invasion", "Spearhead from Space", "Inferno", "Terror of the Zygons", "Pyramids of Mars", "The Seeds of Doom", "The Deadly Assassin", "The Robots of Death" and "The Talons of Weng-Chiang".
Rip away! ;D

Davison was the best Doctor Who... and Eccleston was the second best
