I've just reached the end of volume five and am impressed with quite how much Brelan's character has turned around. In the early episodes he was at best a cardboard villain - monomaniacally pursuing the Daedalus project no matter what the cost (denying Space city supplies post-disaster, trying to have Creasy sacked so he could break up the Ilea, and so on). In more recent episodes he's been given a lot of depth and has become my favourite character (well, other than Creasy ). The SAM files, his reaction to Mercedes' confession, and finally the change in his attitudes towards Anna and the Principal have quite transformed him. So is Brelan being rejigged as one of the main characters, or is he going to vanish like Bromwich and Rosie?

No, Brelan doesn't vanish!

At least he's not going to do a Bromwich then ;D
I have to say that pushing Brelan into a more central role (in the Copernicus story ate least) and effectively replacing Rosie with the more confrontational Principal, have had the effect of making the programme more personalit clash driven (which is no bad thing).

... his reaction to Mercedes' confession... I LOVE that scene. Wonderfully played and written.

Anyone else find Brelan's crush on Mercedes desperately unconvincing?

It does come out of... nowhere., yes Alan!

I loved was the way that Brelan seemed hostile about Mercedes and Alan's plan, only for his hostility to extend only as far as their plan being badly executed (not checking on water, etc.).

I love his initial reaction to tell her to get out. Anna plays that scene beautifully in the way she begs to kept on.
As for the Brelan/Mercedes thing - well, I'm not giving anything away, but it will make sense. I think we may be talking more about these things as you work your way through the next few volumes.

Yes, he's definitely come on as a character since the series started, I think. Couldn't really warm to him in the first episode much, but his reintroduction wa sa nice way of adding some conflict to the story once the Ilea had escaped from the cloud, and (by episode 43) he's now emerged as one of the most interesting characters in it. Rather controlled, and often plays his cards close to his chest, but is obviously repressing strong feelings which occasionally come to the surface. Very self confident and can have a fierce temper at times.
Also much more capable of empathy than it would have appeared at first.

I wonder how Brelan's lonely hearts ad would have run:
"Power crazed, short monomaniac seeks beautiful heiress for funding and eight years incarceration on Daedalus Project. Ability to deal with temper tantrums an advantage."
